A great session this morning from OPSS who have commissioned some research work on digital innovations and specifically digital twins. I certainly learnt quite a bit and was extremely encouraged to see my ex colleagues delving into what is a proactive forward thinking piece of work that will no doubt make a huge contribution in time across the product consumer space.
This topic is nothing new in the aeronautic, energy and construction space and I was interested to learn how the Estonian Government has digitalised its very own city by producing a digital twin that has the capability to assess the general health of each and every building and I can’t help but think about Grenfell Tower and how using this sort of technology could literally save many, many lives.
If we translate this right down the chain into what we class as fundamental consumer goods so the likes of your fridge freezers, washing machines, ovens, microwaves, coffee machines, toasters and kettles having the technological ability to assess the health of a product and predict the likelihood of some kind of failure which could result in x, y and z, the potential is phenomenal.
I would encourage businesses, whether you be manufacturers, product developers, standards bodies, universities or consumer campaign organisations, to connect up with OPSS who are instigating a round of interviews right now. For those who might be in a position share their experiences/expertise in this area or for those wanting to find out more and talk through what the enablers, blockers or associated risks might be, I think it might very well be worth your while connecting in.
