3 months ago, I threw together a post on the impending ‘UK Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure’ regime in order to brace respectively my clients and wider network of what’s coming down the track…
On Monday OPSS, National Cyber Security and DSIT went live with the news that the ‘UK had officially rolled out new security laws to safeguard consumers from cyber crime.’
OPSS are now the UK National Regulator which in my opinion is a very positive step.
And this is of huge significance to all of us, consumers, businesses and manufacturers of products such as phones, TV’s and smart doorbells. Essentially nearly all internet connected smart devices will be required by law to meet minimum-security standards.
And I will make this clear here as I have to my clients: businesses in the supply chains of these products need to now be compliant with the legislation and specifically issue a ‘Statement of Compliance’.
So, this includes all those who make a product available – manufacturers, importers, authorised representatives and distributers. Even in the instance where a manufacturer has produced product prior, but has not made this available, before 29th April an SoC will need to be issued dependent on a number of ‘circumstances’ that I can talk through if anyone needs clarification…
If you take a look through (as I have) OPSS’ Enforcement Policy, a point is made of following a pragmatic approach to enforcement which is very encouraging taking into consideration (1) impact of potential non-compliance and (2) evidence available.
Government has decided to exempt certain categories of product from the PSTI regime, with charge points for electric vehicles being one of them as such goods are already regulated under other legislation with more categories to be announced. So watch this space…
