If you produce consumer goods containing some kind of battery, you need to have this update on your radar which has been kicking around town since 2020 going by the name of…Proposal for a regulation of the European Parliament and the Council concerning batteries and waste batteries repealing Directive 2006/66/EC and amending Regulation (EU) No 2019/1020.
Not the most riveting I know but the intention it sets will be impactful across all member states.
After a long route through the legislative process, following the final vote in plenary, the Council will now have to formally endorse the text before its publication in the EU Official Journal shortly after and its entry into force.
As you may expect, sustainability and the green agenda is at the top table as well as performance, safety, robust targets for waste collection & recycling and the provision of a whole raft of educational information for end users. The other headline which is likely to impact upon a number of businesses is the removability/replaceability requirements that essentially means that portable batteries in appliances will need to be easier to replace. This all wrapped within a robust wrapper of due diligence policies to address all these factors and the social and environmental business risks means that you and your business will need to up its game…
