Back in 2014, the then Prince Charles visited a flood-stricken area in Somerset where the locals were up in arms about the lack of interest from both the PM and the Environment Agency. Prince Charles was famously quoted as saying that “there’s nothing like a jolly good disaster to get people to start doing something.”
This photo was taken in 2015 shows Prince Charles with the then CEO of Glen Dimplex, Martin Naughton the Irish/British billionaire who was at the time trying to pacify his workers striking for a 27p pay rise.
Spring forward to November 2022, and our now King’s government, aka my old ‘pals’ at OPSS, issued a safety warning last week concerning the use of certain models of Belling, Stoves and New World gas range cookers, manufactured by Glen Dimplex Home Appliances (GDHA).
Why? you may well ask…
Consumers are being warned that using the gas grill when the door is closed could result in dangerous levels of carbon monoxide building up with the possibility of posing serious injury or death to those within the immediate environment.
Through collaboration between the company and the regulator the company has committed to ensuring 66000 gas cookers will be made safe through a modification programme with the company agreeing to visit every home affected to implement a technical modification.
That is a huge undertaking, but as I often say, “if you think compliance expensive, you want to try dealing with a product safety report!”…
Glen Dimplex is Ireland’s largest privately-owned manufacturing business and employs over 8,500 people worldwide with an annual turnover over 1 billion. The latest CEO is very much focussed on becoming a leader of the “transition to a sustainable world”, through selling electric heating solutions to replace fossil fuel-burning systems.
Very commendable, but I’d argue right now that they need to invest their time and money in ensuring they have their current portfolio in order before concentrating on anything new.
Martin Naughton once said “every time I hear Brexit, I want to take a pill because it gives me a headache”…
A good old dose of carbon monoxide Mr Naughton typically causes headache, dizziness, weakness, upset stomach, vomiting, chest pain, confusion and worse…
