Fortunately, my father is a fit and healthy 76 year old. Unfortunately, he’s no ‘silversurfer’ and as I result I have to oversee and pay for his sporadic internet purchases…

Recently he wanted to purchase an electric heater 🔥 and frustratingly his purchase was one penny short of being eligible for free delivery.

So conversation went as follows;

Dad, “Can you not just pick it up?”……

Me, “I would do, but I am hardly passing the nearest one”.

Whilst I am not being critical of this retailer’s business model a trip to an industrial estate in the depths of winter is hardly on my recently written bucket list…

Dad, “Okay, I’ll buy something else, I’ve got the code here..”

I quickly check the code on my phone, 2000 woodscrews…

Me, “ that’s a lot of screws, have you a big project lined up?”…

Dad, “Nope, you never know when they might come in handy”…

Me, “Are you sure? You’d probably have enough screws there to deck an area somewhere in the region of an Olympic swimming pool. You’ll get a letter from the Queen before you use all of them!”.. 👑

Dad, “Yep, they’re a bargain!”….

Accepting any further questioning would be futile, the electric heater and 2000 woodscrews arrived safely in the Manchester suburbs the following day….

Moral of the story…

Ultimately I am here to advise you on the most cost effective practical solution to solve your regulatory problem. It’s your decision if you want to follow my advice, I won’t hold it against if you choose not to but don’t blame me when you’re looking at a box of wood screws for the next twenty years…
