Whilst having a productive 1:1 zoom meeting last week with a client who imports and exports a range of cosmetic products, the topic of ‘Extended producer responsibility’, (EPR) cropped up in the conversation.
John is from Slough but let’s not let that get in the way of a good story…
“I’ve no idea what it’s about? Whether my business activities are covered? And If I am , what the bloody hell I should do about it?” said John. 😕
I took a deep breath and did an impromptu executive summary…
“I haven’t got the bandwidth for that sh**e”, John replied…💩
I couldn’t help but smile when I thought my website states, “We’re here to help relieve that regulatory burden so you can concentrate on running a successful business.” With hindsight I am going to change the wording to “I deal with all the regulatory sh**te that you don’t have the bandwidth to deal with”… I’ll leave those changes just for now…
During my time at OPSS, we spent a significant amount of time working with our colleagues in DEFRA who continue to hold the policy pen across many aspects of the environmental protection space.
This all puts me in a pretty good position to help by talking through the fundamentals which .gov.uk which to put it mildly just can’t quite articulate in the same manner at the best of times…
Right now, there is a significant amount of pressure upon the powers that be to commit to protecting the environment to achieve that well versed net zero carbon emissions target by 2050. EPR falls very much into that territory of targets…📦
The nuts and bolts of EPR has a philanthropic objective to reduce the environmental impact of the packaging wrapped around products throughout their life cycle and that’s got to be a good thing. The tricky part is navigating your way through the detail concerning responsibility which is partly a data and retention exercise with a requirement to submit information to DEFRA under the extended producer responsibility. 🗃️
Having tracked this piece of legislation through its path through parliament, I am now well versed in the practicalities of it, I can walk you and your business through the ins and out.
What is important to note is that the actions that need to be taken depend on the size of your business, turnover, how any packaging has been supplied as well as total weight handled per annum. The fundamental concept being that the polluter pays..
So, if my like John you just don’t have the bandwidth, or if you have more questions than answers, then DM me, I promise to think outside the ‘box’….
